Transitioning from diet culture to food freedom.
Diet culture:
-Following an outside meal plan while not listening to your body
-Feeling like your body can’t be trusted
-Feelings of deprivation around food AND/OR feeling out of control around food
-Nutrition brings up feelings of anxiety/deprivation/”eating cardboard”
-Feelings of anxiety re: how you eat/don’t eat
Transition stage (this can look different from person to person and the length of this stage varies):
-Allowing yourself to eat previously forbidden/”off limit” foods
-Learning to tune in to hunger/fullness cues
-Learning what foods truly satisfy you
-Learning what foods you actually like to eat
-Exploring what foods/eating patterns help you feel your best
-Exploring what motivates your food/eating decisions
-Releasing perceived “control” over your weight and letting your body take over
-Viewing foods as morally neutral (vs “I’m good if I eat X” or “I’m bad if I eat X”)
Embracing food freedom:
-Continuing habits from transition phase
-Making eating decisions based on self-care vs self-control
-Food becomes, just food—not such a big deal
-Nutrition means eating what makes your body feel good/taking care of your body
-You can eat previously forbidden foods knowing you can have them anytime you want. (Deprivation leads to overeating/feeling out of control around food.)
-Feel less anxiety around eating and more in tune with your body and its needs
-Practice gratitude for your body and what it does for you
